Vitamin D for Children: Do They Need a Supplement?

By Ellis Okonjo · Oct 23, 2026 · 5 min read

In a nutshell

Vitamin D supports bones and teeth. In some climates and seasons, supplements are recommended.

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium for healthy bones and teeth. The body makes most of it from sunlight on the skin.

In places with limited winter sunlight, many health authorities recommend supplements for babies and children. This is general information; check local guidance or ask your doctor.

Tip 1 Sources of vitamin D

  • 💡 Sunlight on skin, mainly in spring and summer
  • 💡 Oily fish such as salmon and sardines
  • 💡 Eggs
  • 💡 Fortified foods like some cereals and formula

Tip 2 Who may need a supplement

Guidance in many countries recommends supplements for breastfed babies, children in autumn and winter, children with darker skin, and those who spend little time outdoors. Formula-fed babies may already get enough from formula.

Tip 3 Do not overdo it

Too much vitamin D can be harmful. Use supplements made for children at the recommended dose.

Tip 4 Sun safety balance

Short periods outdoors help vitamin D production, but avoid sunburn. See our sun safety guide.
