Helping Your Child Cope With Exam Stress

In a nutshell

Some nerves are normal. Routine, rest, and reassurance help.

Exams can be a stressful time for children and parents.

You can make a big difference by providing calm support and helping with routines.

Tip 1 Signs of stress

  • 💡 Trouble sleeping
  • 💡 Irritability or tearfulness
  • 💡 Headaches or stomach aches
  • 💡 Loss of appetite
  • 💡 Withdrawing from friends

Tip 2 Practical support

Help them plan revision in short sessions with breaks. Provide a quiet space, healthy snacks, and regular meals. Encourage exercise and time outside.

Tip 3 Keep perspective

Reassure them that exams are important but not everything, and that you love them regardless of results.

Tip 4 When to seek help

If stress is overwhelming or persistent, talk to teachers or a doctor. Schools often have support available.

Tip 5 On the day

A good breakfast, water, and leaving plenty of time to get to school help avoid extra stress. Encourage your child to check they have the equipment they need the night before. Afterwards, try not to pick through every question. Ask how they feel, let them rest, and move on to preparing for the next exam rather than dwelling on the last one.
