Healthy Teeth for Kids: Brushing, Diet, and Dentist Visits

In a nutshell
Good habits from the first tooth protect children’s smiles for life.
Tooth decay is one of the most common preventable childhood health problems.
Brushing twice a day, limiting sugary foods, and regular dental visits make a big difference.
Tip 1 Brushing
Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears. Use a fluoride toothpaste in the amount recommended for your child’s age — typically a smear for babies and a pea-sized amount for older children. Supervise brushing until around age seven or eight.
Tip 2 Diet
- 💡 Limit sugary snacks and drinks to mealtimes
- 💡 Offer water and milk as main drinks
- 💡 Avoid putting babies to bed with bottles of milk or juice
- 💡 Choose tooth-friendly snacks like cheese and vegetables
Tip 3 Dentist visits
Take children to the dentist early, around the first birthday or as advised locally. Early visits help children get used to the dentist.
Tip 4 Make it fun
Use brushing charts, songs, or timers. Let children choose their toothbrush.
This is general parenting information, not medical advice. Every child is different — talk to your paediatrician, family doctor, or a qualified specialist about your child’s health, development, or behaviour. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
