Stair Gates and Window Safety
By Ellis Okonjo · Oct 21, 2026 · 5 min read
In a nutshell
Falls are a leading cause of injury in young children. Gates and window restrictors help.
Once babies start crawling and climbing, stairs and windows become hazards.
Installing safety equipment early prevents falls.
Tip 1 Stair gates
- 💡 Use hardware-mounted gates at the top of stairs
- 💡 Pressure-fit gates are suitable for the bottom of stairs and doorways
- 💡 Check gates meet safety standards
- 💡 Always close gates behind you
Tip 2 Windows
Fit window restrictors that limit opening. Move furniture away from windows so children cannot climb up.
Tip 3 Balconies
Keep balcony doors locked and furniture away from railings.

Tip 5 Teaching stair skills
Gates are important, but children also need to learn to climb stairs safely. Under supervision, teach toddlers to climb up and come down backwards on their tummies. Keep stairs clear of toys and clutter, ensure banisters are secure, and add a lower handrail if needed. Good lighting on stairs helps everyone. Remove gates once children can safely open them or climb over, as they can become a hazard.
